Open our Eyes to Sacred Presence

“She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him. ‘Dear woman, why are you crying?’ Jesus asked her, ‘Who are you looking for?’”

John 20:14-15

There have been times when my circumstances have obstructed my view of God's presence. It can become a lonely place, one of isolation and void. Seeking God’s presence remains vital in my daily walk. The Bible verse found in Psalm 84:10 best describes my perspective: “Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere.”

Within the gospel of John (chapter 20:11-18,) we see that Mary didn’t recognize Jesus when she went to visit the tomb after the crucifixion. Her grief was overwhelming, and her heart was broken. Could it be possible that she didn’t recognize him because she did not expect to find him alive and was blinded by her grief?

We see in verse 16 that Mary’s circumstances were not as they first appeared. I wonder how often I have been in a similar situation– how often have you? Can you recall a time you were blinded by the difficult circumstances or heartache right in front of you?

These practices help me recognize God’s presence in all circumstances. Awareness of just how near God is to us can be a source of strength, wisdom, and peace— just as it brings celebration and joy into a special time or season of life.

Regardless of my situation, time spent reading my bible and praying provides a loving reminder of God’s sacred presence. This blessing really only requires an open heart to seek the Lord.

Quieting our soul through prayer provides us with supernatural peace, even though it may flee as our day unfolds. Luke 5:16 teaches that this was a habit of Jesus.

Choosing to believe that Christ is the son of God and through Him we have eternal life provides us peace and tranquility to accept what life may bring our way. John 20:31 assures us of a powerful life.

Holding onto God’s promises gives us confidence to walk under His care and trust Him during difficulties. Isaiah 40:31 promises we can run and not grow weary when waiting on the Lord.

Celebrating the good gifts God provides reminds us that God's gifts are for enjoyment. (Ecclesiastes 2:24-25)

Let’s be intentional to open our eyes, not to miss what God is constantly doing on our behalf. This is where we can seek God’s holy presence.

Would you pray this with me?

Dear Father,

Help us to seek you in the everyday, the mundane, and also in our trials and joys as we live out our days on this earth. You deserve all praise and honor in all circumstances. We can trust that You are a good, good father who desires to see us grow more into the image of Jesus. Help us to follow Christ’s example of always being in step with You. Thank You for the Holy Spirit, we ask You to make us more aware of how close You are to us every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
