Hope: An Anchor for the Soul
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus has entered on our behalf.”
Hebrews 6:19-20a (NIV)
Jay and I took our second cruise only a few years ago. Being an early riser, I began each morning with a wonderful little ritual on deck eight in the Library and Cafe. Perched high above the waters, my quiet time with God while watching the sun usher in the day was a memorable experience. It was truly a majestic approach as we entered a different port each morning. In the early dawn, these smaller boats were still, held by their anchors. While the boat owners and guests slept, they did not worry of floating away, since the anchors kept them in their place. This gives us a worthy metaphor for living.
Several factors are needed to ensure a boat will remain secure, such as a seabed of sand or mud, not rocks. A suitable anchor line is also necessary -- either chain or rope, depending on the type of seabed. Once the anchor is slowly lowered, the boat owner will often check the setting to be certain the anchor is firmly dug in--not simply dragging.
This is similar to hope being secured in our heart; a tight anchor to Christ keeps us fastened to His solid foundation. We are secure and immovable when anchored to His unchanging promises. This is where my hope comes from. God’s love and faithfulness anchors my soul and gives me hope, no matter what comes my way. This is not to say we won’t walk through storms and get battered about. Walking through a storm knowing I am secure in God’s grace, mercy, and love is similar to a boat being firmly anchored to a seabed.
How do we stay anchored?
Determine your beliefs about God’s love for you–nothing can separate us from God's great love (Romans 8:37-39)
Spend time with God in prayer, scripture and praise. (James 4:8)
Trust God to be your anchor when storms come (and they will.) (Lamentations 3:21-26)
“Pour out to the God of Hope and Be filled” Romans 15:13
Would you pray this with me?
Dear Father,
“This world and its hardships can be stormy; we need to be anchored to YOU above all else. Remind each reader today, how great is Your love for us and You are able to give us Hope. Thank You, Jesus for providing a way to the Father, in whom we find HOPE. In Jesus name, Amen.”
