The Power of the Holy Spirit

“Then the Spirit came into me and set me on my feet.” Ezekiel 3:24

Our oldest son works with power companies across the country, and it's amazing to think about all the logistics involved in providing power to different communities. It’s something I take for granted when I hit the kitchen light switch and turn on my teakettle or coffee pot long before much of my community begins their days.

Today I got to thinking about our spiritual source of power. The Bible teaches us the Holy Spirit is a main character in the world's history, always present and ever ready to be our help when we may feel overwhelmed. One story resonated with me this morning: the story of God's calling Ezekiel to deliver an unwelcome message to His people. This would not be a pleasant job, and the people would not listen. As the scriptures tell, The Holy Spirit played an active role in this story on several occasions. On more than one account, He sets Ezekiel on his feet or lifts him up. (Ezekiel 2:2, 3:11, 3:14, 3:24) It’s a reminder of God’s power source: the Holy Spirit.

Living in the Bible Belt, “God” and “Jesus” come up often in conversations without fear of offending. It seems the Holy Spirit is mentioned less often. In reality, this is the power source for us, from where I sense God’s presence, leading, and comfort.

Have you ever specifically prayed to the Holy Spirit or read about how relevant this power is in Biblical history? Do you consider how valuable the Spirit of God is in our everyday lives? This week, as a difficult situation is weighing on my mind, I will call upon the Holy Spirit for strength, wisdom, and discernment. After praying, I will recall the verse from 2 Corinthians 1:20 “For every one of God's promises is ‘yes’ in Him. Therefore, through Him we also say ‘Amen’ to the glory of God.”

Friend, God has given us many promises, and in John 14, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit will come into the world and be our advocate.

Dear Holy Spirit,

Thank you for being ever present in my life, and today I come and turn to You, asking for Your help with the hard places of this week. May the power and glory be Yours forever and ever. Amen!
